Data proves it, Cambridge is safe!

‘What’s the safest place in the Boston area?’ was something I was curious to find out after I heard the City of Boston had published all of their Crime Incidents reports between 2012-2015. In short summary Cambridge is one of the safest places (or the safest) you might find in Boston with no reported shootings nearby Harvard or MIT campus.

Summary:

Figure 1: There seem to be between 6k-8k incidents in Boston every month. That includes very wide scope of incidents ranging from property loss to homicide.

Figure 2: Out of almost 270.000 incidents reported between 2012-2015 there were only 697 that involved a gun shooting.

Figure 3: Finally when looking only at incidents with gunshots in the time period, everything north of the Charles river seems to be safe.

Conclusion and next steps:

Cambridge is safe and data proves it! When discussing this with a #husbandoncampus college in the Harvard MPA program, he suggested I should find data points on cycling data in Boston and add it on top of the incident report to see if there is a correlation.
