Theater Review: Les Miserables

Yesterday, me and my girlfriend went to see the play “Les Miserables”, in Þjóðleikhúsið, Reykjavík Iceland. Overall the musical was spectacular, one of the best, if not the best I have seen in Iceland, and abroad, so far. As a result I wanted to make a small blog post to review the piece and thank the director and actors for a fantastic perfomance!

Review:

The atmosphere between the actors, choreography in the dances and the amazing talent pool of singers assigned to the musical was truly astonishing to witness. Most of the actors are well known in Iceland and have been around in a variety of bands, TV Shows, as well as being well acquainted in Icelandic theater.

A few the actors had an excellent appearance on the stage, noteworthy was Egill Ólafsson as Javert the prison keeper, Margrét Eir as Madame Thénardier, the main thieves wife, Jóhannes Haukur Jóhannesson as Enjolras (leader of the rebel group) and the surprising great performance by Bjarni Snæbjörnsson as Feuilly, the student, prisoner, pimp and begger.

The star of the show, with a superb performance, one of the best ones I have seen so far, was Þór Breiðfjörð as Jean Valjean. His astonishing opera like singing voice as well as perfect acting performance was a key to the success of the entire piece. My personal favorite was when Valjean gets pardoned by the Bishop of Digne. Also when Þór Breiðjörð went for the final bow every single guest in the theater stood up to greet him with a cheer, more intensily then I have seen in Iceland before.

This is really an event you should not miss. The musical says so much about human nature and makes you rethink certain moments in your life.

You can get your tickets here (it is in Icelandic)
